“The woman said to him, ‘Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.’” (John 4:15)
Three weeks into Lent, we may be thirsty, hungry, or craving whatever it is that we chose to forgo in this season. We, like the Samaritan woman, may be asking, “Give me a drink” (John 4:7). Or we, like the disciples, may be urging others to satisfy their hunger with earthly food (John 4:31). This season teaches us to look to Jesus amid our cravings. In Lent, we learn to ask for living water, to see the fields as eternally ripe, and to crave a relationship with Messiah who dwells among us. Our physical thirst, hunger, and cravings are real – and so too is the Savior of the world who satisfies these needs and provides us more nourishment than we could ever imagine. May we not forget that our Lenten commitments are commitments to draw us closer to God. While they may leave us thirsty for the water of this world, when we place Christ at the center of our actions, God nourishes us with a living water so that we may never be thirsty again. |
