Let us pray.
God, bless the words of my lips, that they may be spoken for Your glory. May we have open eyes, hearts, and minds as we receive Your Word today here in this Holy place. Amen. Amen. Today, I want to tell you a story. A story of a young boy, the youngest of 8 children, who became the second king of Israel. This boy’s name is David. David’s story teaches us that God uses even the youngest members of Creation to make God’s kingdom come on earth. This is his story. Esta es su historia. Turning to 1 Samuel 16, we read that the time had come for Israel to receive a second king. The first king of Israel, Saul, did not lead Israel for the glory of God. Thus, God commanded the prophet Samuel to find another king for God’s chosen people. When God commands something of us, we do it. So, one day, Samuel went to the town of Bethlehem – the same town in which Jesus would be born – to find a man named Jesse, just like God commanded him. Samuel was afraid that Saul would find him. However, God promised to protect Samuel on his journey. God delivered on this promise. When Samuel arrived in Bethlehem, the elders allowed him in to their town and Samuel found Jesse. Now Jesse had 8 sons. 7 of them he brought to Samuel because he thought they would make good kings of Israel. But God did not want any of these 7 (1 Samuel 16:10). So, Samuel asked Jesse a final question. Samuel asked: “Are all your sons here?” (1 Samuel 16:11). “Todos sus hijos están aquí?” pregunto Samuel. A final child, the youngest named David, remained. Jesse, however, assumed David could not be the king as he was the youngest. Because of this, David remained in the fields, taking care of the sheep. But, as soon as David was brought to Samuel, the LORD confirmed that David would be the next king of Israel. Samuel then anointed David, and the youngest of the sons became king. What does it mean to be “anointed”? Que significa ser ungido? Literally, it means that Samuel poured oil on David’s head to signify his kingship. Spiritually, to be anointed means to be given the Holy Spirit by God. In future weeks, we’ll hear that David’s reign as king was not always easy, even though God chose him. The same will be true for our lives. Though God uses each of us, sometimes, life will be challenging. However, God never left David. Instead, the Spirit of the LORD stayed with David forever. The same is true for us. Through Jesus’s death on the cross, we’ve all been anointed as leaders of the Heavenly Kingdom because each of us is a beloved child of God. As children of God, we have a responsibility to our Heavenly Parent to make the kingdom of God a reality in our world. But do we do that? Heaven seems so far away… ¿Pero, como lo hacemos? El Cielo parece tan lejano… But Heaven can be here around us. Pero Cielo puede estar aquí alrededor nuestro. When we use our gifts and talents to glorify others and worship God, we make Heaven a reality on earth. This is something we can do every day. This is something David tried to do every day. David had an incredible gift for poetry and music. Some of us here may be familiar with Salmos? Well, David wrote many of the Psalms that we still recite today. His poetry was, and is, used for personal and communal prayer to God in every situation imaginable. Like David, we are all called to make the kingdom of God a reality by using our gifts and talents to worship God. And what is more, is that you all have unique gifts (singing, dancing, leadership, speaking, organizing, helping, planning, listening, loving, etc.). May we always give thanks to God for all our gifts and talents, even if they appear as small as a mustard seed. Then, with our gifts, we can either chose to use them for good, or for bad. When we use them for good, for helping others, God delights. And when we use our God-given gifts for others and for the glory of God, others grow, we grow, and the kingdom of God on earth grows. Because, even the kingdom of God on earth started out small Porque, incluso el reino de Dios en la tierra empezó pequeño. In Mark, we read that Jesus compared the kingdom of God to a mustard seed (Mark 4:31). Amen. Mustard seeds are some of the tiniest seeds – but grow into some of the biggest trees. The tree, however, cannot grow big and provide shelter on its own. Rather, it needs food, water, and light. The same is true of the kingdom of God. Heaven on earther must be cultivated. And we, as God’s anointed leaders, can do that by using our gifts and talents to glorify the Lord, regardless of our size. When we do this, we then become the shade in which the birds of the air rest. So, our lesson from San Marcos, teaches us that Jesus teaches us that great power, healing power, can come from small things. Meanwhile, David’s story teaches us that God uses even the smallest members of Creation to make God’s kingdom come on earth. Our size, age, gender, nor ability level matter to God. Instead, what matters is what is on the inside because “the LORD looks on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). God gave each of us gifts and talents to use to the glory of the Lord. Talents unique to you. When we use these God-given gifts, we make heaven on earth shine a little brighter, grow a little bigger, and become a reality for all our sisters and brothers in Christ. Talentos únicos a ti. Remember, that just like David, who was the youngest member of his family but was still selected as king by God, God will use each of you too. God selected you and gave you unique gifts to use to lead God’s kingdom here on earth. Amen. |
