Let us pray.
Amen y amen. David danced. The God-appointed king of Israel danced. This was not some half-hearted, weak dance; but instead an emotional, passionate, Spirit-led dance. Because David “danced before the Lord with all his might” (2 Samuel 6:14). Friends, King David did not just dance – he danced, for the glory of the Lord. David bailaba. Sisters and Brothers, do we ever dance before God? Do we ever bring our entire selves – our bodies, our hearts, our minds, and our souls – fully in to worshipping? Do we ever allow ourselves to do this? Or are we afraid, afraid of what dancing for the Lord might mean? I don’t know about you all but, sometimes, I am afraid. Other times, the presence of the Holy Spirit is so strong that I just want to dance, sing, cry, and shout for the glory of the Lord. I want to be like David because David, David danced. Together, on this beautiful afternoon, we are going to explore what dancing, however we may “dance,” for the joy of the Lord looks like for our lives as Christians. Our lesson from 2 Samuel ends with the Israelites celebrating the return of the presence of the Lord to the city of David. During this celebration, there is prayer, food, and dancing – all for the overwhelming joy of the Lord. However, David danced only after a strenuous rescue mission to recover the Ark of God. The Ark of the God had been missing from David’s city since the wars which broke out between Israel and the surrounding nations. With the Ark gone, the Israelite’s felt that God’s presence was gone, too. Thus, David felt it necessary to retrieve the Ark. However, repossessing the Ark was no easy task. We read that the journey required 30,000 Israelites (2 Samuel 6:1) and included an uphill invasion (2 Samuel 6:2). The books of Exodus tells us that the Ark itself would have been about 1.3 meters long, 0.8 meters wide, and 0.8 meters deep. It was made of wood, the outside was covered in gold, with gold decorations affixed to the outside (Exodus). Within the Ark were the 10 commandments, Aaron’s rod, and an urn. People estimate the ark could have weighed anywhere between 150 kilograms and 280 kilograms. Thus, this was not some small box. No, to retrieve the Ark was an arduous and difficult task. However, for David and the Israelites, the work was worth it. This is because Ark of God symbolized the presence of the Lord. Thus, to bring the ark to the city of their king suggested that God would bless and reside with the kingdom of Israel. So of course, once they had completed their mission and brought the Ark to David’s city, David danced, full of joy, for the Lord. This first part of David’s story illuminates a truth for our personal faith journeys. At times, the journey will be difficult. We may have to climb steep hills, or to carry heavy burdens. Just like the Israelites, we may feel that God is not with us. Yet, we will never be alone because we, as Christians, are members of a strong community of believers, united in Spirit by the love of Christ. And, the reality is, that God never leaves us. It is we who simply fail to feel the Lord’s presence. This feeling however, always comes back. What’s even more beautiful about David’s story is not just that he danced, but that he danced despite his failures. Though the king of Israel, David did not always behave as a man of God nor did he have a perfect life. David’s own life was threatened, he committed adultery, had someone killed, and he wrestled with challenges within his own family. Like us, David failed sometimes. He experienced darkness. However, we read that David still found the energy and courage to not just dance, but dance “before the Lord with all his might.” David never forgot that his joy came from the Lord, from feeling God’s presence in his life. For David, the Arc of God signified this presence. So, before the Lord, David danced. Though we may not have a physical icon of God that we need to recover from an enemy nation like the Israelites, our Psalm gives us a reason to dance, too. Psalm 24 teaches us that God is everywhere, and everything is God’s. We read: “The earth is the Lord's and all that is it, the world, and those who live in it” (Psalm 24:1). How incredible is it that, just by existing in our world, we are given the opportunity stand at God’s feet, amidst all the good that God created? This idea that the world begins and ends of the feet of the Lord is worth celebrating! Through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we can also read in the Psalm that God is in everything. The King of glory, Jesus Christ, has entered through the gates and ancient doors about which the psalmist writes (Psalm 24:7, 9). God has entered in to our world when God came to earth as a man, forever uniting the Holy Trinity with all of creation. While for David and the Israelites the Arc of God signified the presence of the Lord, for us as Christians, we must realize that God is present everywhere, in all of Creation. When David felt the presence of the Lord, David danced. Why, then, don’t we dance? Do we ever throw our entire selves – our bodies, our hearts, our minds, and our souls – fully in to worshipping? Perhaps the answer is “no” because we don’t know where our joy comes from… Well, sisters and brothers, our joy comes from the Lord! So let’s give it back to the Lord! Perhaps it’s because we don’t feel God’s presence in our lives… I know that this might be a reality for many of us because I’ve been there. Much like the people of Israel when they did not have the Arc of God in their care, I’ve felt estranged from the Lord. I’ve felt a hole in my heart and cried, “God, where are you? Why now? Why me?” Rather than dancing, I wanted to yell, to run, to curse God. I felt pain, hatred. Much like the dense Ark of God, my burden felt heavy. I tried to carry it alone, but I couldn’t. But, one day, I was reminded by my community of what it was like to dance before the Lord with all my might. So, like David, I danced. There’s a final reason, however, that we might not dance. Perhaps, we don’t dance because dancing can be difficult. It can be scary. Perhaps, we do not know how to dance… This is okay! Because what I want to present to you is that we do not need to literally dance in order to celebrate God. Dancing is simply a word to suggest acting in response to feeling the joy of Holy Spirit in our lives. And, thanks be to God, if we’re ever unsure of how we might be able to dance, we have a community of sisters and brothers in Christ and endless examples of persons in the Bible who can remind us how. For example, through his dance, David shows us that we can rejoice in the presence of God in many ways. Though he literally danced, he also sacrificed to the Lord, and then he served others. In all his actions, David celebrated the return of God’s presence with the Israelites. Thus, when we realize that we are at the feet of God, all that is left to do is celebrate. Like David. Because David, b. David celebrated. But then, and pay attention, the final part of David’s story is that David then cared for “all the people, the whole multitude of Israel, both men and women…” This means that part of David’s dance was to serve others. So then, what does celebrating the fact that, no matter where we go, we are in the presence of God, look like for our lives? I believe this means we are called to care for our sisters and brothers, for the land, for all of creation – just as Jesus showed us how to do. Jesus ministered to the sick. Jesus ate with sinners. Jesus fed the hungry. Jesus welcomed strangers. Jesus loved the poor. Jesus taught the haughty. Jesus humbled himself to the cross, the heaviest weight of them all, for us. Jesus served. So, as Christians, to care for others is our dance. Caring for others is what dancing for the joy of the Lord looks like for our lives, as Christians. And, just like David, we cannot simply dance – we must dance “with all our might.” Thus, sisters and brothers, when I asked you, “do we ever dance before God? Do we ever throw our entire selves – our bodies, our hearts, our minds, and our souls – fully in to worshipping,” consider the many forms your response to these questions could take. There is no one “right” answer – so long as we remember that everything in this world belongs to God. David remembered this and David, David danced. David lo recordó y David, David bailó. So, what will we do when we next feel God’s presence in our lives? Sometimes, I cry. I pray. I sing. I dance. I open my heart to all of Creation. I do this because “earth is the Lord's and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it” (Psalm 24:1), because I stand at the feet of the Lord. A veces, yo lloro. Yo oro. Yo canto. But, I do not stand alone. I stand with you all, my sisters and brothers in Christ. Our Psalm tells us that, when we lift our souls to God, when we follow Christ, we “will receive blessing from the LORD, and vindication from the God of their salvation” (Psalm 24:5). All we must do, is dance. David, David danced. Will you allow yourself to follow Christ, to feel the Holy Spirit, and dance for the glory of the Lord? Amen, y Amen. |
