Let us Pray.
May I preach in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. Amen. Just like you invited me in, this season of Advent is a season of invitation – an invitation to both faithfully reflect on and expectantly hope for the realization of God’s Kingdom come here on earth. Advent invites us into solidarity with all those who experienced oppression while waiting the first coming of Christ and invites us to live filled with hope as we await the second coming of the one who will execute “justice and righteousness in the land.” As Christians who believe that “Christ has died, Christ is risen, and Christ will come again,” this is our hope. Our Old Testament reading connects us to the injustice faced by and expectations of our ancestors. The “righteous Branch to spring up for David” who fulfills God’s promise to save Judah and allow Jerusalem to live in safety is Jesus (Jeremiah 33:15). Without context, this does not seem like a controversial message. However, Jeremiah lived in a time of human corruption, political instability, and pervasive injustice. The Israelites were disobeying God with every action. They were then overrun by another nation and sent into exile. Jeremiah reads like an epic story of warfare and conflict. The book reads like a story, that is, until we realize that Jeremiah lived in a time not much different than our own. Yet, even when Israel’s future looked hopeless, God offered God’s people a word of hope. God promised salvation, safety, righteousness, and justice…an end to sufferings of this earth that our Gospel tell us “will take place” (Luke 21:35). Israel’s story, then, is our story. When reflecting on Jeremiah’s ability to bring expectant hope in a time of perceived hopelessness, I’m reminded of stories from my own life, from those of my family and friends, and from strangers. All of our stories contain moments of hopelessness. Yet, without that hopelessness, we would not know hope. We may not even know God. Because, sisters and brothers, sometimes Jesus shines brightest in the darkness. Quizás no conozcamos a Dios. This hope in darkness is Israel’s story, this is my story, and this is all our story. We can trust that what God begins, God ends justly. Advent is this period of expectation in which we find solidarity with the past and hope for the future. Yet, even future hope will be met with trial before it can be realized. Advent, therefore, also invites us to be aware of “dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life” (Luke 21:34) so that we may rise above them and stand with the Son of Man. Luke writes that there will be distress among the nations and a roaring of the seas before Christ comes again (Luke 21:26). Earlier in chapter 21, Luke records Jesus saying that wars and insurrections, nations rising against nations, earthquakes, and famines will also occur before the second coming (21:9-11). These are real claims of destruction – events that turn the world, our communities, and our lives upside down. What is more, is that Jesus warns that even when all this happens, “the end will not follow immediately” (21:9). Rather, like our ancient Israelite ancestors, we will face more trials still. I firmly believe that God finds ways to speak to us in our current situations. To this end, the warnings of the Gospel leapt off the pages as I read them and reflected on the message God is trying to send us through the Holy Scripture. Today’s Gospel message embodies the tension that is this Advent. And, if I’m being honest, I struggled with how to faithfully convey this tension. I cannot fathom a more appropriate time than now for Advent, the period in which we anxiously await the fulfillment of God’s Love, to begin. It seems as if we are currently reliving the political turmoil Jeremiah faced. It can be extremely hard to find hope in this season – and, sisters and brothers, that is okay to admit. However, Luke’s Gospel gives us the hope of Advent as he paints for us a picture of hopelessness. Every sign about which Jesus speaks in Luke is a sign that God is walking with us on this Earth. Advent, then, not only invites us to look to Christ, but Advent is Christ. Christ took on Advent’s tension between solidarity with the oppressed and hope of Salvation. Because of this, Jesus tells us in Luke’s Gospel to “stand up and raise [our] heads” (Luke 21:28) when facing the “worries of this life” (Luke 21:34). Even with the corruption and injustice we face today, a fig tree will still bloom, and summer will still come as the Gospel says (Luke 21:29-31). This is the hope that Luke offers us found within the tension of Advent of what was, is, and is to come. On the one hand, Advent is a period of expectation in which we find solidarity with the past. On the other, it is also a period in which we expectantly await a future in Christ. It is a period which allows us to find our fig tree – our symbol of hope that the Holy Spirit is at work – regardless of the situation of this world. Jeremiah’s fig tree was the deliverance of Judah and Jerusalem from the hand of foreign invaders. The Disciples’ fig tree was walking alongside Jesus. For us, as we again await the One who will bring “justice and righteousness in the land,” perhaps our fig tree is found in the love shown by our community, the happiness in a baby’s smile, or even the corruption of society. So, sisters and brothers, here is our Advent question: What is your fig tree through which you can see God’s promise of salvation coming true? May we remember that Advent is a period of expectation in which we find solidarity with the past and hope for the future. As Christians who believe that “Christ has died, Christ is risen, and Christ will come again,” we have much for which to be hopeful. Amen y Amen. |
